As regulars to this WEB Site knows I have always liked listening to peoples stories and even ideas for new preserves often emerge. Last week was no exception I was attending our regular Farmers Market at Leamington Spa as normal when one one of my now regular 80 year old customer came to seem me to purchase as normal her 2 pots of preserves. Audrey (a spritely 79 year old) every month like clockwork purchases a Seville Marmalade and a Strawberry Jam (infact I get it ready for her before she comes at about 9:30 in the morning) came clutching a brown paper bag in her hands which she gave to me saying "This used to belong to my late mother and I believe you should have it". On opening the bag I found inside an old recipe booklet printed by the British Government Ministry Of Food during WW2 containing recipes for various items including "preserves" which made use of the limited availability of products during the war years.
On reflection after she left my stall and looking through the booklet that Audrey gave me I felt very touched that she had given this obviously treasured booklet to me and decided then that I would produce a very limited selection of items from this booklet to show my appreciation.
Therefore I will be producing 4 items from this vintage booklet produced by the Ministry Of Food which will be a Parsley Honey (This being a substitute for real Honey), Green Bean Chutney, Orange And Apple Marmalade & the old favourite Apple Chutney.
These items will only be produced in 45ml jars and will sell as part of our "45ml Pick And Mix Selection" at £1:20 each or 2 for £2:00

Wine Clubs are to be found almost everywhere in the world in places where wines are made, SO we have introduced a Preserve Club showcasing handmade preserves made by me in Birmingham with local produce where possible.

I can now say 2 months on since we created the original 2 preserves that the “Chilli” range products have been going extremely well, in fact you might be interested to know we are increasing the range and have only this week produced the first batch of a “Mango and Scotch Bonnet Chutney”.

Currently we are producing the Scotch Bonnet Savory Jam,Green Pepper & Jalapeno Jelly and the new addition of the Mango & Scotch Bonnet Chutney. These are available from our regular FM's and food shows we are attending in 45ml and 110ml jars.

Later on in the year we have secured a supply of 8 Chillies from a Dorset Chilli grower and intend to produce for the Ludlow Food & Drink Festival in September a “Chilli Pack” which will contain preserves made from the 8 Chillies produced by them. This range of preserves will go from a very "mild" heat at one end of the scale to the the famous “Dorset Naga” which as you might know is the hottest Chilli in the world.

Holly And The Ivy are more than delighted to hear and be part of Moseley farmers market which has been declared the National Urban Farmers’ Market of the Year. The title comes from The National Farmers’ Retail and Markets Association (FARMA) who certify farmers’ markets across the UK, ensuring that all the produce is sold by the producers who make it themselves locally. The decision was announced on Tuesday 11 November at the FARMA national conference in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The judges felt Moseley farmers' market to be an exemplary, community focused event. It is large and lively, regularly featuring more than 50 producers selling some excellent quality produce, and has become a monthly meeting point for an average 5,000 people in Birmingham's innercity suburbs.

The farmers' market operates as a voluntary-run Community Interest Group (CIC). The structure ensures that all profits from the market are given back to the local people, through investing in projects such as Moseley-in-bloom, local art displays and the 'music in the park' festival. Such campaigns are also promoted at the market.

Environmental issues are a priority. SusMo is a campaign launched last year by the market in collaboration with other community groups and local politicians to promote personal and community action for a more sustainable Moseley. The project has reduced the number of plastic bags at the market, increased awareness of recycling and energy use, and seen more customers coming on foot or by bike.

David Isgrove, Moseley farmers’ market manager, said 'This would not have been possible without the support of the whole community of Moseley and we should all be very proud to have been given the highest award possible for a Farmers’ Market. It has taken 11 years since my wife and I had the idea of starting a farmers’ market in Moseley and over 9 years since the first 7 farmers came to Moseley wondering if they were daft and it would work. We have proved that working together we can achieve far more than we would ever have thought possible… Well done Moseley!'

Sue Thomson, Quality Standards Manager for FARMA, commented, “Moseley is a fantastically lively and bustling farmers’ market. It brings together fine food, a number of groups from the surrounding community and local businesses: a remarkable achievement.”

The Farmers Market operates from the centre of Moseley village from 9:00 - 15:00 on the 4th Saturday of every month, except for december when it will be on Saturday 20th December
